See my post on the Tips and Tricks forum for displaying the most recent categories with entries, but without duplicates.
That might sound a little confusing, but read through the posts, and it should make sense.

i understand how this works, but which template do i put this in so it shows up on my blog? maybe i'm just not reading this right but i don't get where to put it. i've just recently started with MT so some of this is all greek to me. thanks for any help you can give me.

Good question. The code (I believe) can go anywhere in an index template. To have it on all pages, you could do the following:
1. Create a new index template with the code in featured in the message boards, with an output file of, say, last5categories.php.
2. Then in your individual and other archives (category, monthly, etc.) put an include statement such as the following: <?php include("last5categories.php"); ?>l;
